Three Film Directors 3 - Andrew Dominik (DIRECTIONS UNIT)

Name: Andrew Dominik

Age: 52

D.O.P: October 7th, 1967, Wellington, New Zealand

Bio: Being bought up in Australia and graduated from Melbourne's Swinburne Film School back in 1988. Beginning his first feature film "Chopper" from 2000 and continued to make more crime, drama films based on the themes of violence, self destructive characters and biopics on real life figures.

What I Find Interesting About His Work: I find his work interesting a lot on his dangerous characters he creates for starters. From watching The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Dominik is very good at focusing between the characters dialogue and the dangerous choices they make. With Brad Pitt as Jessie James, plays this violent, dangerous and a even broken character inside of him, from Pitt's performance and Dominik's directing he knows when it's the right time to present the characters in the right emotions. Dominik is also good at hiding a lot of realistic themes and messages in his films, for example in Killing Them Softly has a lot of political messages about America and where they come from around the society that the characters are living in and the  surrounds around them.

What Techinques I Have Learnt From Andrew Dominik's Work: With the aspects i have experienced from his films, he has a lot of similarities as does Denis Villeneuve has. For characters, realistic themes, but more of a political way. However if Andrew Dominik made a lot more films in the past as he's only made three feature films so far, i think i could understand a lot about his targeted themes he creates from his directing.
