Three Film Directors - 1. Denis Villeneuve (DIRECTIONS UNIT)
Name: Denis Villeneuve
Age: 52
DOP: October 3rd 1967, Quebec, Canada
Bio: Son to Nicole Demers and Jean Villeneuve. He studied the topic of cinema at the University du Quebec, Montreal in Canada. In 1991 he was making short films and even won an award at Radio - Canada's youth film competition. Villeneuve officially began his career as a film director and writer at the National Film Board of Canada.
What Interests I Have from His Work: Denis Villeneuve makes very relevant characters with the demons they are going through them psychically and mentally. He also creates characters that think and decide through his stories what they are doing, by making choices if they are right from their human nature. In depth and excellent detail of his character arcs, if it's the hero or anti hero from any of his films. His filmmaking presents itself in a very visual and detail way to make us, the audience feel that we are in his films. Villeneuve has a interest in making puzzles in his films and "plays" around the audiences minds. The majority of his films contain in the element of "violence", he finds violence one of his personal fears, however when he presents his films at the up most realistic way, he makes sure to go all the way up to the top and to not be afraid of showing the violence in his films as they are relevant to the film, the films subject matter and of course the plot as well. He questions a lot in his stories about how do we as humans know how to control our emotions and feelings, and by thinking is it our conscious on the present day. Or our sub conscious thinking a experience from the past. My overall interests about Denis Villeneuve's directing is he tries to make every aspect in his stories relevant, making his characters portray as real people and struggling to control their emotions and trying to achieve their arcs.
The Techinques I Have Learnt From Denis Villeneuve: I have learnt that Villeneuve's techinques has a priority on characters and their emotions. He questions a lot on the psychological elements of how characters think and act towards themselves and to others. Creating small puzzles, questions to the audiences about understanding the characters feelings and the atmospheres he creates in his films.
