THREE SHORT FILMS REVIEWS - Self Direct Day (22.10.19)

1. Short Film Review

Title: Plot - Never Give Up - A drama short film about a young guy who's trying to achieve his goal in getting back on his feet. As he is disabled and wants to start running again.

Genre: Drama

Opinion of the film -  I have watched this film many times and still enjoy it's presentation from it's technical aspects from the main performance of Jimmy Gore, who also is the writer and director of the project. It's a plot about constantly getting beaten down, but never giving up and has a very realistic message to individuals who do suffer with this disability.

How it supports the process into my project - The plot does not have some similarities to my concept, however in terms of the cinematography, directing and even the main performance, i could take some type of inspiration from this to match how i am going to capture and execute the drama in my concept. This plot also presents itself very well in a show, not tell aspect and that is how i can take inspiration from it to use in my project.

2. Short Film Review

Genre: Drama

Title: Plot - Listen To Me -  A emotional, drama short film about a young girl feels bullied at her school and feels like an outsider to the world and wants to commit suicide. A second character is a young guy who is another school student, but also a cleaner as well and he starts to find out in a class room about a notebook with tears and the word "Sky" on the book as it represents the girl characters name. Both our characters start to come across each other and may also come across with the same problem about each other, however with a small difference about their problems.

Opinion of the film - I very much enjoyed and appreciated this films concept and presentation. I was very satisfied with the twists and turns, both from a story and visual perspective.This visual way of telling the whole story makes complete sense and shows two of the characters having wonderful chemistry. It focuses a lot about guilt, life and being an outcast to the world.

How it supports the process into my project - The plot supports my process from the films characters and their "demons". The film has a interesting way of dialogue which contains "sign language" with the aspect of showing it and not so much telling. It takes me into the process more about development into the characters and also presenting a different way of dialogue with a interesting use of sign language, this made the film more emotional and appropriate from it's tone.

3. Short Film Review

Genre: Drama 

Title: Plot - Trending -  A cyberbully, drama film about a guy whose holding a group of class friends in a hostage situation at gun point. The situation is about the gunner being bullied from a trending video and is taking the situation too personal and seriously.

Opinion of the film - This is a concept that presents itself in a very extreme way and knows when it needs to get very dark, intense and quite realistic with it's society about social media and how certain individuals can take social media posts very personally. It's understandable how the main character is feeling in terms of the reaction, the situation and the atmosphere he is creating. It shows that he could be taking it extremely personally and emotionally. It's interesting and very different how this film presents the subject matter of social media and cyberbullying is overall.

How it supports the process into my project-  With the films props such as a gun holder and characters personality, i feel that i can take some type of notice about creating a sensitive and intense character, for my film. The films time period i find very appropriate with the themes of technology. The situation of a life and death with the gun holder helps from it's tone and atmosphere, which i can use within my own film. Connecting the characters about a very personal matter also comes across with my own projects tone as well.
