Britains Teenage Knife Wars | Jermaine Jenas Investigates

(Relevant Obersational Documentary - Thursday 19th March 2020

Synopsis: This is a documentary about ex Footballer Jermaine Jenas, Jenas returns back to his hometown in Nottingham, Cliffton and returns because of the shocking increase of knife crime happening in his hometown. In the documentary, Jermaine goes around and interviews real individuals who carries weapons for protection, Jermaine also interviews family members who have lost siblings from the incidents of knife crimes and Jermaine finally also interviews doctors/ nurses about showing him how much damage a knife can make badly consequences. The documentary is a BBC III production and was released back in 2017.

What Shots Were Used in the Documentary: The majority of shots were used from an handheld perspective, making the tone of the documentary feel intense, realistic and even quite scary to witness Jermaine actually interview real and very young individuals with carrying extremely dangerous weapons. Their are also some one shots and two shots of Jermaine and a individual he is interviewing from standing between each other, both of the shots are never static and always from a handheld point. One of my favourite moments and shots in the documentary, is when we are about to see Jermaine go and meet three young individuals. However before we actually see him with them, we get to witness a few close ups of the location, which is to give a quick feel and sense of what the location is going to be presented as to Jermaine and of course, us the audiences.

The Way It Looks & How the Story Feels: The way this documentary looks, makes it very realistic, shocking and very personal for Jermaine Jenas. It shows how much Jenas really cares about his hometown, how he is concerned for very young individuals starting from the age of seventeen of making their lives being in a position of fear, danger and potentially death. The documentary shows a great example of using a lot of coverage, when Jermaine attends to meet the different individuals of the subject matter and what is very satisfying, is that this relevant documentary does not show fear of what it's about and knows how important the topic of knife crime really is. The way the documentary feels, it's to show the different perspectives of knife crime from a family member who lost their son, a nurse/ doctor and especially the different individuals who carries weapons for protection. It's the  different perspectives, of what are the big consequences of knife crime and how it can effect people's safety in Jermaine Jenas hometown in Nottingham, Clifftown and most importantly, it's about individuals who are causing knife crime and their mental health wellbeing.

What Does It Make Me Feel as an Audience Member: It makes me feel that knife crime is a topic that needs to be listened and talked about more often. Focusing on supporting young individuals, who are struggling with their wellbeing and how they can have a much more positive and brighter future ahead of them. From watching the entire documentary, it makes me feel a bit more confident to go on location to create our own documentary and it has given my own group to find different contributors to participate for their own perspectives of what knife crime is about and how we can release our own vision to show more safety of knife crime in Kent.
