Analysis Of The Concept and Content of a Studio Production Relevant To The Commissioned Production

The Concept

This Morning is an original British, ITV studio production, talk, and morning show and it was first released and aired back in 1988. According to the IMDB website, it explains a brief of the synopsis and concept of the show to be about a 'magazine show featuring lifestyle, cookery, fashion, and news segment, along with celebrity interviews and gossip'. (Needhan, C. 1990). Reading that synopsis, it's showing that the concept features a mixture of subjects and industries that can be an appropriate show for audiences and individuals who have an interest and passion for those specific subjects. On more specifics on the target audiences, This Morning looks to be an appropriate structure for all ages, however, the concept always aires at a time of the day where children will be at school and adults at work, and from the title of the show, it's obvious the show gets presented and aired during the morning of the day. With the specifics of the show's air time, from the information, I have found on the Heart website and it says that 'This Morning will now start an hour earlier at 10am.' (Dear, A. 2020). This is very interesting and current to read from the article by Alice Dear, as The Jeremy Kyle Show use to air at the same time before it got canceled. Which in previous years and decades, This Morning used to air at eleven during the daytime and which is still a time of the week, where everyone present at their professional and education locations. In my opinion, This Morning is a concept also appropriate for anyone working from home and even appropriate for elderly individuals and still having those specific subjects. This Morning has the majority of seasons and episodes of two individual hosts/ presenters and according to the tv.com website it shows the total number of celebrities who have hosted in the past and the present time, are over thirteen individuals (tv.com. 2021). At this current time, the two most popular and present presenters are Philip Scofield and Holly Willoughby together, and then there is Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary together. When it comes to the most popular hosts of This Morning, according to the Digital Spy website, at number two is Holly Willoughby who joined the studio production back in 2009 and by quoting from the online article on the Digital Spy website and I quote, "Since joining the show, she and Scofield have been voted the nation's favorite double act, won tonnes of awards and fans can't get enough of their playful on-screen antics". (Agius, N. 2018). This makes me wonder, that Holly herself is a much-beloved, popular, and likable celebrity individual who knows how to entertain their target audiences and gain viewership for This Morning. Moving onto number one is Philip Scofield, who joined the production back in 2002 and is nearing his twenty-year anniversary of being a host and presenter of This Morning. Looking back onto the online article by Nicola Agius, Agius mentions that 'he is the longest-running presenter ever on the show and everybody loves him. Plus, 'He's conducted some of the programme's most iconic interviews from Kerry Katona to Katie Hopkins to David Cameron, and even when he messes up, it's brilliant TV'. (Agius, N. 2018). Reading and presenting those two sentences by Agius makes me believe Philip Scofield is truly very recognizable, likable and even a humous presence to watch and experience on This Morning. This brings me to mentioning both Philip Scofield and Holly Willoughby, and why they're very entertaining and watchable hosts for a show like This Morning and its concept is very appropriate with having Willoughby and Scofield as their most popular current hosts.

I feel by seeing these two individuals are meant to represent a different perspective and opinion on the subject matter they are going to discuss. From two completely different age demographics and races.

One shot of one of the guest's individuals in the discussion of the subject regarding Harry and Meghan about delaying their interview with Oprah Winfrey. Seeing and hearing this individual's opinion about the argument they are talking about.

Some stock footage, to give the viewer's a closer look and experience of who the individuals are. In my opinion, the reason why the picture is blurred out from the YouTube video is to do with copyright issues or concerns, the footage could be belonging to another studio production.

One shot of the other guest individual from an online format. Still being in the same discussion about Harry and Meghan, this is now the chance to see the other individual's opinion and take on the argument/ subject matter.

Moving onto another discussion about the COVID vaccine, with going back to the whole perspective shots from all of the different locations.

Back to the two-shot medium of the two hosts, moving onto the final discussion and on the branding, it's presenting a more of a lighter and less serious topic with the guests.

Moving onto a different subject, this time on cooking and this is another subject This Morning enjoys to show and interacts with. This is a one-shot, close-up of a food dish that has been cooked already, however, the cooks are going to show the audiences the instructions and stages of cooking this dish.

A two, two shots of the two live locations. Philip and Holly at the studio tasting and trying the dishes of food that the cooks are making live from Dubai. Going into more detail and taste of specific food dish they're in discussion about. Holly is asking questions about the two cooks' backgrounds and history in their occupations. Making the subject more interesting for the two cooks background and business in the subject of catering.

With more content of This Morning, this is a picture of the set and the contents it contains when the show discusses all of the different subjects. A living room area on the far left, a coffee table design in the middle beside one of the cameras, and the kitchen area nearest on the right in the picture. To explain my opinion of this set design, I feel it's representing a very comfortable, light, warm, day time and home experience for the entire crew of the production, the two different hosts of the shows daily weekly episodes, and most importantly for the audiences watching This Morning from the comfort and safety of their own home. The interior of the furniture and architecture, are all appropriate for its live time airing, making all of the colours and content feel very fresh, and when it comes to waking up on a brand new day.  

Relevance To The Commissioned Idea

I feel the relevance of This Morning is it's classed as a "Magazine show" and according to the TV Tropes website, it explains the meaning to be an 'a show with a number of reports on particular subjects (e.g. current events, entertainment, bungee jumping)' (Eddie, F. 2004). This makes me believe that This Morning is very relevant and related to the commissioned production of Trending. With Trending going to be a studio production about interacting and discussing the different "trends" and by being about different subjects and just as This Morning does those similar styles as a studio production. From the content of This Morning and most specifically the examples I have shown from above, the commission production will not be interacting with the specific subjects that the This Morning episode did. However, the production design of This Morning, makes me feel it will have a similar feel to Trending, and once again by mentioning it to be a comforting, light-hearted, warm, daytime and home feel the experience that hoping the pilot of Trending will represent towards our target audience demographic. My overall opinion of the relevance between This Morning and Trending is the style of both being a magazine show, the comforting feel of the production set, and even the similar hosts that I hope ours can represent as that same likeness, positive, and heartwarming individuals for our studio productions progress from its pilot episode.
